The Private Household as a Workplace

A deeply personal sanctuary or a high-performance enterprise? In the homes of international decision-makers, the boundaries between the two are usually blurred. Butlers, nannies, and their peers provide essential relief in high-stakes daily routines. But what exactly falls within the remit of a Head of Fleet or a Private Chef?

The children require academic support, and a balanced dinner does not cook itself. A broken lightbulb must be replaced, while the ever-growing laundry pile, gardening, and grocery shopping all demand attention. For weeks, windows that were once crystal clear have offered nothing but a clouded view of the outside world. In a private household, the list of diverse tasks is nearly infinite. While these are usually handled by family members themselves, professional obligations can quickly push one to the limits of what is feasible. After all, the day only has 24 hours, and without sleep, achieving “longevity” is impossible. This applies especially to those who lead publicly listed companies, make sporting history, or shape global affairs in political roles. Much like in a professional context, international decision-makers often rely on the support of specialists and experts within their most personal domestic spheres. Which professions are represented across the private jet, the city residence, and the summer estate? And what does their typical scope of work entail? Here is a look at the staffing structure of international private households.

Butler

A butler is traditionally responsible for service, etiquette, and guest care. He or she serves meals, maintains the wardrobe, runs errands, and contributes significantly to seamless operations – whether in daily life, while traveling, or when receiving guests. Excellent butlers combine service orientation, organizational talent, and discretion. In doing so, they always act in harmony with the long-standing traditions of the household.

Chief of Staff

A Chief of Staff holds a senior leadership function, often positioned between the Principals, the Family Office, and Estate Management. The focus lies on the strategic management of complex structures. He or she always maintains a view of the “big picture.” Consequently, a Chief of Staff creates sustainable relief in daily realities defined by high levels of responsibility, organically grown structures, and numerous interfaces. This position is particularly relevant in very large and extensive setups and requires strategic thinking, strong communication skills, and high emotional intelligence.

Close Protection Officer (CPO)

The work of Close Protection Officers involves far more than just physical protection at close range. At its core are discreet risk analysis, preventive planning, and seamless security during daily life and travel. CPOs coordinate security measures in the background, vet locations and schedules in advance, and manage interfaces with staff and service providers. The goal is to detect and neutralize threats early without noticeably restricting the clients’ quality of life.

Driver / Close Protection Driver

Drivers are often more than just chauffeurs. As Close Protection Drivers, they are an integral part of the security concept. Beyond excellent driving skills, time management, discretion, service orientation, and an understanding of protocol are essential.

Estate Manager

Estate Managers carry overall responsibility for the smooth operation of the household. This includes staff leadership, budget control, maintenance, security coordination, and quality standards. The role combines strategic and operational tasks. Excellent leadership qualities, discretion, and intercultural competence are essential.

Governess

In contrast to a nanny, a governess focuses less on general care and the emotional development of children and more on their education – ranging from language skills to etiquette.

Grounds Manager

Grounds Management involves far more than traditional gardening. The person in charge oversees the design and ongoing maintenance of extensive outdoor areas to the highest aesthetic and technical standards. At times, this may include complex infrastructure as well as the integration of security and sustainability concepts. Outdoor spaces are not only private retreats for the employers but also serve significant representative purposes.

Head of Fleet

In large setups, a Head of Fleet manages a family’s entire fleet, from car collections to yachts, helicopters, and private jets. In addition to strategic planning and budget control, the role also encompasses driver and crew management. The highest service, security, and maintenance standards must be guaranteed.

Housekeeping

A housekeeper is responsible for the cleaning, laundry, and organization of the household. Housekeeping works closely with Estate Management and the Butler. The role is not just about cleanliness, it also requires material expertise, absolute reliability, and discretion.

Maternity Nurse

Maternity Nurses specialize in the around-the-clock care of newborns and supporting the mother during the postpartum period. They typically accompany young families for a few weeks up to a year. Maternity Nurses establish sleep and eating routines, support new parents, and act as a liaison to medical professionals. Empathy, discretion, flexibility, and a willingness to travel internationally are a given.

Nanny

Nannies are responsible for the care, safety, and emotional development of children. Their role is naturally highly sensitive and requires pedagogical competence, cultural adaptability, empathy, and absolute loyalty to the family.

Personal Assistant (PA)

A Personal Assistant is the central interface in the Principals’ daily lives. In addition to calendar management and organization, Personal Assistants often handle confidential coordination tasks between private and business interests. This role requires extreme resilience, loyalty, and the ability to anticipate needs, as it offers deep insight into the employers’ lives.

Principal(s)

The heads of an international household are referred to as the Principals. Principals define the lifestyle, service levels, values, and expectations. For their staff, it is essential to precisely understand the Principals’ priorities, decision-making processes, and communication styles, as they shape the entire household culture.

Private Chef

The Private Chef offers bespoke culinary experiences tailored to the individual preferences, health requirements, and lifestyle of the Principals. Often, Private Chefs are also responsible for private events and catering during travel. Short-term adjustments are part of the daily routine and require a high degree of flexibility.
